Update 4/14/2020

NOTICE REGARDING YARD WASTE COLLECTION

GFL, our waste contractor, has confirmed that yard waste pickup will begin again on Monday, April 20th.
They have assured the City that there should be no further interruption of this service.

CONTRACTED LAWN SERVICES
Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order 2020-21 sets forth the temporary
discontinuation of contracted landscaping services.

However, Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office issued some clarification to the Order by indicating certain landscaping
activities may continue if
“the service is necessary to maintain and improve the safety, sanitation,
and essential operations of a residence”

Proper grass cutting and maintenance does promote rodent control,
maintains storm water system integrity and the general sanitation of our neighborhoods.

Therefore, our interpretation of this Order means that our residents or businesses
may continue to maintain the grass areas of their properties through a contracted service.

The City of Southgate will not issue a violation to contractors or individuals
who perform this service and follow our grass cutting and littering ordinances.
For instance, it is still a violation of our ordinance to blow lawn cuttings into the street and not clean them up.
This can cause problems with our street storm water system and potential flooding.

Further, this notice applies to grass cutting only. Non-essential landscaping is not allowed.

It is also important to note that any business and/or contractor performing
grass cutting services must comply with social distancing and
other guidelines listed in Section 5c of the Order and the Center for Decease Control.
