Joseph Marsh

Director Marsh has over twenty-three years of law enforcement experience, starting his career with the Detroit Police Department, where he served over three years with DPD, then climbed the ranks within the Southgate Police Department from Patrol Officer, Lieutenant, Chief of Police to Director of Public Safety. He is the City of Southgate’s third Director of Public Safety and oversees both the Southgate Police and Fire Departments.

In addition to his positions within the City, Marsh has served in many other roles, including:

  • Marine Corps Reserve
  • Oakland Community College Reserve Academy Instructor
  • Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Officer
  • Background Investigator
  • Field Training Officer

He also carries forth many Professional Memberships, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Michigan Association Chiefs of Police, and the Southeast Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.

Marsh received his Master’s degree from Michigan State University, his Bachelor’s degree from Madonna University, and his Associate's Degree from Schoolcraft College. He also graduated from the Eastern Michigan University School of Police Staff and Command.  Additionally, he has attended the Michigan Police Executive Development Conference. 

As Director, Marsh has led the police department to achieve accreditation, developed a Mental Health Clinician Program, Special Operations Team, Community Relations Team, and is a member of the Downriver School Safety Task Force, and much more.
